My Approach

My approach to psychotherapy is based on a model of collaboration and education.

A first question that I believe we should address and then try to answer is whether that which troubles you is “hardware or software?” Once answered, we can then begin to look at “how” we can collaborate in either eliminating or minimizing the effects of that which brings you to my office. Your participation in the psychotherapy process will help identify the “what” and “why.”  Once we discuss that, we can then explore the “how” change can take place.  And finally, we will begin to look at the “when” is a good time to begin.

I am “solution focused” with those patients with whom I work.  As such, I view our collaboration as a working together to come up with a solution. It is my belief that we can probably work together to “connect the dots” in order to understand the “why” you do what you do, when you do what you do.

I also believe that psychotherapy involves a bit of education.  It is sort of like you taking a new course that is entitled, “My life 101″…..!  I will provide you with handouts and articles that are based on current research and data with which you may learn new ways of understanding how to cope with those issues that brought you to my office.

With information and data that we gather in my office, we will work together to rewrite the software program or operating system that controls your thinking, emotions, and behavior.

And sometimes, much like when we have a glitch in our computer, we need to reboot!  That is, sometimes we need to make the necessary changes (optimize the hard drive or re-write the program) in order to realize a smoother, more efficient, happier, and more fulfilling life.
